Old Glory called in with LIMITS of yellowfin from their overnight trip!!!

The fishing is heating up at H&M Landing! As we head into the remainder of the week, San Diego’s offshore and coastal fisheries continue to provide anglers with plenty of opportunities.

Our boats are seeing strong yellowfin tuna action offshore, with the Old Glory returning from an overnight trip with 65 yellowfin tuna, along with yellowtail, dorado and skipjack tuna. The Grande also put together an impressive full-day offshore trip with 95 yellowfin tuna, plus yellowtail, dorado and skipjack.

The offshore bite continues to show plenty of variety. H&M’s Nautilus is currently reporting limits of yellowfin tuna along with dorado on the first day of its 2.5-day trip. The Ranger 85 recently returned from a 2.5-day trip with 53 bluefin tuna, along with calico bass, dorado, yellowfin tuna and yellowtail.

Closer to home, the inshore fishing remains productive as well. The Malihini recently reported yellowtail, calico bass, sand bass, bonito and a bullet tuna, while the Premier has been finding very good yellowtail and bonito fishing on its half-day trips.

Offered year ‘round, the Full Day is one of our most popular trips. Reservations are highly suggested, as these trips fill quickly especially during this El Niño season San Diego is experiencing now.

Our Full Day trips fish the legendary Coronado Islands or the coast of Mexico in search of gamefish such as Yellowtail. Additional species targeted may include Barracuda, Bonito, Calico Bass and more!

When conditions exist, we may fish offshore targeting Yellowtail, Tuna and Dorado.

Departures Year Around at 5:30 AM; returns approximately 5-7 PM
Rental Equipment: $25-$82 Security Deposit Required

A Valid US Passport is required to fish Mexico’s Coronado Islands.
California Fishing License required when fishing in US waters.

Late Summer Sportfishing: Adjusting Your Tackle

Welcome, everyone. Late August and early September is a fantastic time to be out on the water, but as the seasons shift, so must our gear.

Right now, we aren't seeing massive bluefin tuna. Instead, the focus is entirely on daytime action targeting Yellowtail, Dorado, and Yellowfin Tuna.

To be successful on these daytime or overnight trips, we need to divide our strategy into two main approaches: live bait and lures.

The Live Bait Strategy
Currently, the bait barge is throwing us a curveball. We are seeing an extreme mix of either super tiny anchovies or exceptionally large sardines. You must bring a diverse tackle pack to be prepared for whatever you get that morning.

For Tiny Anchovies: Downsize your terminal tackle significantly. You will want a very small hook, like a Mustad size 4, or even down to a size 6. Because these baits are so light, pair them with a small sinker—half an ounce or under, like a rubber core or egg sinker—to help the bait get down and swim away from the boat.

For Big Sardines: Be ready to size up immediately. Keep a pack of size 1 or 2/0 hooks on hand.

Line and Leader Selection
Daytime fish have great visibility and can be incredibly picky. Finessing your presentation is the key to consistent hookups.

Live Bait Setup: Stick to a 20 or 25-pound fluorocarbon leader. Since we are targeting mostly smaller school-sized fish in bright daylight, this lighter setup will ensure you keep getting bites all day long.

Lure Setup: You can get away with heavier gear here, usually 30 to 40-pound test. However, it is critical that your reel has excellent free spool so these lighter lures can drop to the strike zone quickly.

Lure Fishing: Match the Hatch
When throwing artificials, our goal is to "match the hatch" and imitate those tiny anchovies the pelagics are actively feeding on.

Jig Weights: The sweet spot right now is the 20 to 40-gram range.

Specific Recommendations: A 30-gram Cana or Tyga jig is perfect. You can carry up to a 60-gram jig if the current demands it, but keep it small to trigger those reactionary bites.

Adapting to the bait and sizing down your fluorocarbon will keep your rods bent regardless of what the ocean throws at you this time of year.
