We have compiled a list of insider tips based on feedback from our veteran anglers and recent TripAdvisor reviews. From navigating parking to streamlining your check-in, here is how to bypass the common hassles and maximize your time on the water.
Navigating Point Loma Parking
Finding parking near the landing at 5:00 AM can be a challenge during peak season. To avoid the stress of hauling heavy gear across long distances, we highly recommend arriving at least two hours before departure. Utilize the paid harbor lots adjacent to the landing. For a truly hassle-free morning, many of our seasoned anglers recommend using a ride-share service to get dropped off directly at the check-in queue.
Tackle Suggestions for Sportfishing
Overpacking makes travel difficult, while underpacking leads to missed opportunities. We have put together a comprehensive, free tackle guide to ensure you are rigged up with exactly what you need for current conditions. Review our recommendations before your next departure to save time and rail space.
Avoid Hidden Surprises: Remember that Mexican fishing permits, California licenses, and galley food are often separate from your base ticket price. Purchasing your California fishing licenses online beforehand saves critical time at the counter.
More Rail Space: If combat fishing on crowded rails is a concern, look for our Limited Load trips when booking. These trips offer fewer passengers and a more spacious fishing environment.
Plan Your Catch: Dockside fish processors get exceptionally busy. Knowing your plan for fish processing before you return to the dock will save you hours of waiting in line after an exhausting trip.
Tackle Tips for Multi-Day Trips
For a multiday trip (usually 1.5 to 3 days) out of San Diego, you are stepping into a fishery where you could be catching 15-pound Dorado on a kelp paddy at noon, and battling a 200-pound Bluefin Tuna in the dark at 2:00 AM. Because of this extreme range, you cannot rely on just one or two rods.
To be fully prepared, you need a quiver of distinct setups, primarily focused on live bait (anchovies or sardines) and heavy jigging. Check out the essential tackle breakdown for a San Diego multiday trip in our latest video:
